    Hi all,

Long time automation fan but first time home owner. So, this leads me to want to use my day job skills to create something open source. By day I am a java engineer focusing on web applications.

So my question is, are there any open source projects out there? I would like to contribute and specifically build something for the iPhone. I am also fluent in PHP if one has already started. I dont want to recreate the wheel here if I dont have to.

If not, I would like to build something in Java using Maven, Hibernate, and Jetty to make a small self-contained JAR that would run cross platform.

    Thoughts?

    Johnup,

This is something we are VERY interested in at SHN.

We have started engagement with open remote (which is in a mid – stage) – you can google there.

We are also looking at sponsoring some open source projects at SHN – take a look at the forum under open source projects.

We are willing to sponsor a project in terms of hw if it is compelling / serious. Also, we would look at contributing sw development time.

Currently, the two projects we are looking at are an iphone app for the EZSrve and a java or other non-os specific app frontend for the EZSrve.

    Paul,

I am a very busy person but I am interested in working on this project. Are there any other developers out there working on this already? What would the support be like from your end? It would be great to have help.

I am going to download the open remote source and see what they have so far. If you’d be interested in talking over the phone let me know.

    Paul,

I just dug around in the Open Remote code and I dont really see much there, at all. This appears to be a basic framework and nothing more at this point. Am I missing something?

Open Remote JUST started – they are defining and have some basic Java.

For other developers, not yet – we just put the call out. Once we got interest, we would put the project up on sourceforge.

In regards to support, depending on the project (java UI or iphone app) we would be a HW sponsor. For level of support, you can expect both some development from SHN as well as developer technical support.

So, which project are you interested in? We have a few names of some friends I may be able to recruit to get working on that project as well (unless you have something else in mind).

I am looking at building a web app in Java, catered to the iPhone/iPod touch initially. I just ordered two dimmer modules and an EZServe to get started.

As for other developers, I dont know any that are interested. Im the only one dumb enough to try this in my free time. Unfortunately, its very sporadic due to all the work I am doing on my house thats why I want more help.

As to Open Remote, is the goal of SHN to integrate with this project? If so, what will it buy us?

Do you have access to a mac development station for the iphone / ipod touch SDK?

As for not doing it yourself, there will be one or two developers part time from SHN, as well as 1-2 other external developers who have expressed interest.

    Paul,

No I do not. I have more of an interest in making a web app rather than a Coccoa app for the iPhone. I’d much rather build something that was platform agnostic.

Are there any timelines? Any kickoff?

    Johnup,

I will create a sourceforge page, a forum thread, and send some invites.

As for timeline / milestones, we have to define the project. I imagine it would start with device information and control, and grow from there. However, in any open source project, we need to spend a little time mapping that out. It also depends on where your interests lie.

I will post tomorrow when I get the page created.

    Paul,

Keep me posted. I just started the application and so far things are going well and I can interface with the bridge via a nice iPhone UI to turn and off lamps. Now to get a DB going.

    See this thread

I will post once it is approved.

What IDE are you using (Netbeans?)

Also, if you send me the source I’ll be happy to start reviewing / adding before the sourceforge project is started.

    We have a sourceforge project.
    https://sourceforge.net/projects/ezsrvejavainter/?abmode=1

We can change the name to something snappy later if you would like.

Johnup, if you let me know you sourceforge member name (or signup for one), I will put you on as a developer and we will have a cvs repository active.

For others interested in this project, please let me know. It is a JAVA based UI for the EZSrve, optimized for mobile devices, specifically the iPhone / iPod Touch.
