I can’t quite figure out how to clear the Insteon link database completely, or get it to work reliably.
1. Do a hardware reset of the 2×4.
2. Verify using InHomeFre, SmartHome, or other that no links exist (the SHN utility apparently needs an update before it can read Insteon links; it just says that it found a record, but never reads it).
3. Use SHN utility to set I1 to use Insteon group 1, Cmd 1=11, Cmd2=13.
4. Trigger the input and watch the network activity with any PLM/PLC.
5. The 2×4 appears to be sending Insteon DIRECT messages to 07.03.05, a device that does not exist here, and does not appear in the (empty) link database.
6. The 2×4 ALSO sends an Insteon group broadcast with the appropriate flags and group number.
7. Repeat steps 1-6, and the only thing that changes is the Insteon address to which the DIRECT message goes. It appears to be random.
8. Now link a responder device to I1 using the tap method. The Insteon DIRECT message does not get generated any more; ONLY the broadcast.
Summary of confusion:
I would have thought that if nothing is linked, only the broadcast would be sent. I would also have thought that if one thing is linked, a DIRECT message would be sent to that device, and if multiple things are linked to the same input, a broadcast would be sent.
Last, but not least, when a responder is linked, the broadcast is not followed by group cleanups. In a less-than-perfect environment (i.e., anywhere outside a lab), this means that reliability plummets.
Am I doing something wrong, or misunderstanding what’s supposed to happen?

– The Insteon links database in the underlying PLM (part of the EZIOxx) has a database of 32 links. These follow the layout of the PLM database published by SmartLabs. They contain a device ID and a Group number, among oher things.
– The EZIOxx firmware also maintains a record for each of the physical (Ix) and logical inputs (alarms on the analog inputs and 1-Wire sensor). If this record shows as linked with a non-zero group number, there will be an attempt at sending a group command through the underlying PLM whenever any of the inputs change state. If the group number is zero, no group command will be issued.
– If there is a valid Insteon link, and a corresponding input has the same group number as that link, a group command wit clean-ups will be generated upon activation of the input.
– Status change broadcasts are generated independently of the group messages whenever an input changes and the “enable broadcasts” bit has been set in the configuration register.You should be able to successfully add a link manually using the pushbuttons, then manipulate the input record to change the commands sent and the group number.
