How do I troubleshoot the EZIO8SA and PLM that I bought a couple weeks ago?
It seems like I have tried 5 different outlets, passed it directly through the powerlink V2, turned off all the breakers in the house, and tried to sync if 500 times with no luck.
Only once did Indigo recognize the device, address, and Firmware version, but even then when I installed a reed switch it did not detect a change in the on/off state. Since then I can’t sync it with the Powerlink V2. It gets to the point where the Powerlink V2 sends pings to the device, but the device does not respond.
I don’t know what else to do.
I am using a Mac with Indigo 2.0. I have also plugged it in to a Windows machine and trid to use the utility program, but it didn’t recognize that the EZIO8SA was plugged in.
Is there a systematic way to diagnose the problem or to tell whether the PLM or the EZIO8SA is faulty?
I have installed 5 other Insteon devices lately, so syncing devices is not knew to me. I can’t figure out what the problem is.
Should I contact Simplehomenet and return the two devices or what?
Please help!
AnonymousInactiveMay 27, 2007 at 11:55 amPost count: 192You may want to try a Factory Reset on the PLM.
Unplug it from the AC.
Wait maybe 30 seconds
Hold the SET button and reconnect it to the AC
Keep holding the Set Button for 10 seconds.
Release the Set Button
The LED should go out and in about 30 seconds come back on.Off hand do you remember the Frimware version on your PLM? I am just currious to what is now being sent out.
AnonymousInactiveMay 27, 2007 at 5:44 pmPost count: 408First try the factory reset on the PLM as BLH describes. If that does not work, please call either our support number or you can email me directly and we will get you up and running.
AnonymousInactiveMay 27, 2007 at 11:22 pmPost count: 7The firmware version is 1.7.
I had reset the Powerlink controller once yesterday but that didn’t change anything. I reset it again just now and it is the saeme thing. The PLM is not sending back any info to the Powerlink. I tried syncing by manually enterring the address and letting Indigo try to recognize it on its own. Still nothing.

You reset the Powerlinc, did you reset the PLM from the EZIO8SA kit?
Is you Powerlinc [2414] Serial or USB? Mine with the USB was very sketchy and not relable. Not just with the Simplehome stuff but any software accessing the PLC. In Windows [yes I know you have a Mac] the USB has issues with DirectX 9.AnonymousInactiveMay 29, 2007 at 4:48 pmPost count: 256It is possible to see if the PLM and the EZIO8SA are communicating by observing the LED pattern on power-up. For PLMs prior to version 4.X, the LED turns on, then off successively 6 times, then off again for a longer period, then it finally stays on. In some cases when the external EEPROM is recognized, the pattern is: on, then long off, then solid on.
Please call the hotline and we can help you or determine what part to ship back for repair or upgrade. In PLM version 4.A and above the LED is dimmed so the pattern is harder to observe. However a long off before the LED goes on solidly is discernable.
AnonymousInactiveMay 30, 2007 at 9:31 amPost count: 7I figured out what my problem is. If the PLM cable is not pushed in firmly to the PLM there is no communication. Not sure if that means it is a bad cable or bad plug. In any case it works fine when the two are firmly plugged in.
Is the PLM cable replaceable with an ethernet cable?
AnonymousInactiveMay 31, 2007 at 10:44 amPost count: 7After spending an hour trying to get this working right, the LED on the PLM isn’t comming on and it appears to be completely dead; which after all the troubleshooting and various problems that I have experience with this setup, seems to make sense.
The PLM has probably been the cause of this eratic behavior all along.
AnonymousInactiveMay 31, 2007 at 8:57 pmPost count: 192Well I just got 2 new 2412S units directly from Smarthome and they must not care about old firmware. I got 2 with the old crap 2.4 in them.
I may call and ask for an exchange, but dropping Smarthome/Insteon is looking better to me every day. 😡AnonymousInactiveJune 1, 2007 at 8:29 pmPost count: 256The currently shipping compatible version of the PLM should be 4.A which followed 2.4 as far as Simplehomenet acceptability is concerned. Some PLMs have a defective connector that may explain why the system only works when the cable is firmly plugged in. But most likely it is the connector on the PLM, not the cable. In any event, please return through your source.
AnonymousInactiveJune 1, 2007 at 11:41 pmPost count: 1I don’t quite understand, “The currently shipping compatible version of the PLM should be 4.A which followed 2.4 as far as Simplehomenet acceptability is concerned.” Does this mean that firmware version 2.4 on the PLM does not work well? My version is 2.4 also. Should I be asking for a return? X10 output seems to not work at all.
BTW, these where shipped to me only 3 weeks ago.
Thanks,
DonAnonymousInactiveJune 9, 2007 at 5:14 amPost count: 256DonH, the EZIO8SA does not produce X10 messaging so there is no functionality missing as far as the 2.4 is concerned. SmartLabs controls the PLM firmware and we feel obligated to keep our customers informed and offer the opportunity to upgrade if there is a malfunction with one of our products. There are hundreds of EZIO8SA being used satisfactorily with 2.4. X10 control of the outputs works as advertised.
AnonymousInactiveJune 9, 2007 at 10:30 amPost count: 192Sorry if I confused things. My FW 2.4;no X10 sending was through Docklight; as I knew from the documentation; that the EZIO8SA only received X10 signals and my 2.4 never had any X10 received problems.
