    Hi,

    I have a EZIO8SA with SmartLabs 2412S PLM. I have an Universal Devices ISY99 with a second Smartlabs 2412S PLM. I have a PC running Windows XP SP 3 with USB ports.

    Since I can’t configure the EZIO8SA using the ISY99 I know I need to run the SimpleHomeNet Utility software on the PC.

    Can’t seem to find any documentation on how to connect the PC to the EZIO8SA…. think I need to unplug the ISY99 from the Smartlabs 2412S PLM, and then find a RJ45 to DB9 serial connector, and then a DB9 to USB converter (and Windows drivers), to connect the 2412S to the PC. Then I can run the utility software.

    Is that right? The Utility software then communicates to the EZIO8SA through the powerlines (between the two 2412S PLMs)?

    If this is correct then that’s a pretty odd cable (RJ45 to DB9 serial). Where can I get one?

    Look in the 2412S Box. In one of the hollow filler pieces of the box.
    Should be a serial cable there.

    Afraid not. Each 2412S was bundled with the ISY99 and EZIO8SA. So they shipped with a RJ45/RJ45 ethernet cable to connect the 2412S PLM to each of those devices which also have an RJ45 connector

    Is the cable available from the SmartHome who made the 2412S? Anyone have a part #?

    But did I understand correctly what I need to do…and so this cable is what I need?

    You need three PLMs or disconnect the ISY PLM from the ISY, and connect that PLM to a native Serial port on the PC. When the Simplehomenet Utility Suite starts up the first screen has an input field for the Serial Com port number on the PC. Enter the Serial Comm port number and click Connect.

    The EZIO8SA requires a PLM for its own use. Most SHN devices have a PLM internal to the device. The EZIO8SA is the exception, requiring an external PLM. The Simplehomenet Utility Suite requires an EZSrve, PLM or PLC as a powerline interface. The Serial PLM used by the ISY can be used by the SHN Utility if the ISY PLM is connected to a native PC Serial Comm port.

    Communication with the EZIO8SA is through its physically attached external PLM just as if the EZIO8SA had the PLM chip inside. The PLM Insteon address is the Insteon address of the EZIO8SA. The PLM used by the SHN Utility as the powerline interface is NOT modified in any way by the Utility. Using the ISY PLM for the powerline interface will not change anything the ISY has written into the PLM.

    When I bought my ISY99i from Smarthome. The serial cable was in the PLM box. The needed network cables where also in the kit.

    Something has changed as Smarthome always had the added cables in the PLM box’s.

    I have never seen a part number for the cable separately. As it was always part of the PLM kit. Maybe a cost cutting thing with Smarthome.

    One thing I can say about Smarthome is constancy.
    I have the same cable from old 1132B kits.

    The cable was packaged inside the folds of the cardboard insert. Would not have been visible when the PLM was removed. If the PLM box is still available remove the cardboard insert and look inside the folded sections.

    Yes the cable is well hidden and the packaging has no markings like “Cable Inside here”.

    The only PLM I ever received with no cable was my EZIO8SA kit directly from Simplehomenet. The one form Smarthome did have the cables in the hidden packaging.

    OK found the….must have been thorough when I unpacked the PLMs 😀

    Also found my Serial to USB!

    Will try to do the config now…
