Project Description

When you leave your home for an extended period of time, you don’t want everyone to know.  One of the biggest giveaways is your lights.  Simple schedules may not be enough to deter potential ne’r-do-wells.  Using a Smartenit automation system, you can create a flexible lighting system that allows you to set up unique schedules that will fool anyone into thinking you’re home.

Below you can see the different components you may need to build your lighting solution.  If you already have a Smartenit gateway, just add the items you want to your cart as you go.  If you don’t have a Smartenit gateway, we have a kit that includes the gateway of your choice and other components to tackle this solution.  Just scroll to the bottom of the page and save a bunch by bundling!

 A Gateway

Use one of these as the “brains” of your system, organizing and facilitating all the devices on your network.

A Smart Plug

These plug right into the wall and allow you to control and track the energy consumption of any lamps or lights plugged into it.  Setting convincing “occupied” scheduling is easily achieved through the iSmartenit application.

An Outlet

A Smart Outlet or Switch

These devices install right into your standard outlet boxes. This means you can control lamps plugged into your outlets or overhead lighting controlled by your wall switches. Setting schedules for any lights controlled by these devices is simple through the iSmartenit application.

More detailed instructions on how to discover your Gateway, add devices, and setup Wizards can be found in our Wiki

Step 1: Create an iSmartenit Account and Install Your Gateway

  • Creating an Account will allow you to use our free Cloud capability to quickly connect to your personal gateways from any phone, tablet or computer
  • Follow your Gateway’s Quick Start Guide instructions to connect your model to your network and then power the Gateway
  • After physical installation, you can use the “Discover Gateways” functionality to find the Gateway on your network, making connection easy and getting you automating sooner!
  • Your Gateway’s password defaults to “Smartenit”. Make sure to change it and create a Security PIN in your Security Settings. Your PIN secures your Gateway’s settings and also protects security elements like door locks.
  • After this quick set up, connecting is a matter of just pressing a single button on iSmartenit

Step 2: Add Your Load Controllers

  • Put your Gateway into Discovery mode using the iSmartenit app
  • Follow the quick-start guide instructions for your load controllers to install and put them in joining mode
    • This usually involves pressing a set button while powering the device and possibly doing a power cycle
    • You can add many different load controllers depending on how many appliances you would like to control
    • We offer load controllers in various forms (smart plug and in-wall) and with differing capabilities (dual outlet, energy metering) so you have plenty of options!
  • Your new devices should join your network and appear on the iSmartenit app automatically!

Step 3: Plan Your Wake Up

  • Use the iSmartenit Wizards module to create customizable programs that efficiently use your small appliances
  • You can coordinate your kitchen appliances to your specific wake up time
  •  Create your normal wake up time as a Condition and make each Device activation a corresponding Effect
    • If you have different wake up times on different days, you can use the Days setting and create multiple wake up time Conditions
    • Use Effect delays to stagger appliances so they get power at the precise time you need them
  • Any device that can be plugged into a wall outlet can be scheduled this way.  Based on the load controller you use, you can even see their energy consumption!

Step 4: Eliminate Energy Waste

  • Use the iSmartenit Wizards module to create customizable programs that turn off appliances when you don’t need them
  • You can cut power to multiple appliances at once, ensuring that they turn off even if you forget
    •  Create a Condition for the time you leave for Work in the morning and create Corresponding OFF Effects for each device
    • If you have different departure times on different days, you can use the Days setting and create multiple departure time Conditions
  • Any device that can be plugged into a wall outlet can be scheduled this way.  Based on the load controller you use, you can even see their energy consumption!
